Ek Deewana Tha, Gautham Menon's Hindi remake of his hit Tamil film" Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya", lost quite a bit in translation.
Story: The story revolves around Sachin and his love Jessie. Sachin is an engineer, who has managed to complete his degree, but is completely obsessed with the world of cinema and films. Jessie is a Malayalee Christian with strict orthodox parents. When Sachin sees Jessie for the first time he falls in love with her. However, Jessie, who is a year elder to Sachin, insists that they should just be friends. Sachin leaves no chance to match her, catch her attention or generally trying to make a conversation with her. Later, it’s how the confused yet headstrong Jessie and the completely in love Sachin experience the highs and lows of being in love.
Story Treatment: It’s a stretched attempt to render a love story between two people from different backgrounds and mind frame. The first half becomes intolerable, while second half brings in some emotional sight. In parts, the movie leaves a pleasing effect, surviving on the hope of freshness. However, as the story proceeds, the interest starts diminishing, with everyone around hoping for an end. The attempts to induce twists are unimpressive and make one wonder the need for the dragged narration.
Star Cast: When makers are picking stories from South to remake them in Bollywood, the responsibility on the star cast surely increases. In Ek Deewana Tha, Prateik Babbar has tried to shoulder the responsibility and also churns out emotions in bits and pieces, however, many times, the actor looks confused than innocent. Amy Jackson seems confident, while facing the lenses, but lacks the caliber to essay a confused character like Jessie, which makes her look lifeless in portions. The off-screen chemistry between Amy and Prateik has undoubtedly helped their comfort on-screen as even the intimate scenes between them don’t create uneasiness on the screen. The other characters have hardly any part to play, but have left impact.
Direction: Gautham Menon’s intention to create a fresh love story is fulfilled to an extent. However, the dragged storyline takes away the chance from the director to earn those brownie points for making Prateik and Amy’s performance impressive. Few emotional moments on screen in second half, keep one engrossed.
Dialogues/cinematography/music: Dialogue leaves no impact on the onlooker, apart from the one ‘Ki Jessie hi kyu?’ as the entire film revolves around it. Cinematography is decent, while editing is not flawless. 'Hosanna' is riding high on the popularity chart and even does justice in the film. 'Phoolon Jaisi Ladki', 'Sharminda Hoon' conves different emotions and the saga of love.
Fresh pair with a partially good on-screen chemistry trying to be a part of a lovey-dovey love story could be one reason to give it a try. A dragged storyline which is not worth the climax disappoints. Girls, who can endure anything for a feel good factor to see a guy madly in love with a girl, can too grab a ticket. Overall, Ek Deewana Tha entertains sporadically.
